In 2005 Heritage Counts focused on the state of the heritage in our countryside. The emphasis was timely because it coincided with a serious debate on the future of the countryside.
Changes occurring in the way rural issues are addressed by Government which, combined with a major shift in farm policy, could have significant implications for the future of our rural heritage methods and the decline in profitability of agriculture. The report and accompanying research examined these issues.
This report evaluates the social and economic impacts of grant-funded traditional farm building and drystone wall restoration in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The research was funded by English Heritage, Defra and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA), and carried out by the University of Gloucestershire’s Countryside and Community Research Unit and ADAS.
The overall aims of the project were to provide baseline data on the character, management and threats to listed agricultural buildings in rural and urban fringe areas and to determine the factors that precipitate change in the historic farm building resource.
