Plans to merge organisations such as CABE and English Heritage into a superquango are being drawn up by the government under radical cost-cutting measures.
The proposal would see the merger of a number of heritage groups, including the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Churches Conservation Trust, to save millions of pounds of running costs.
A DCMS source said the idea was being considered by Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who last week told his department's 600 staff that around half of them can expect to lose their jobs in the autumn Spending Review.
The idea to merge the groups is to cut duplication of functions such as human resources and payroll and reduce the costs of separate offices.
Chancellor George Osborne will announce the cuts on October 20th.
